Do You Ever Find Yourself Stuck in a Negative Parenting Mindset?

Hi everyone,

This weekend I was walking my daughter to a birthday party down the street. As I was walking her to the party I caught myself in a highly unproductive and negative mindset. I’m not perfect, BTW. I may have great ideas about parenting but we ALL get caught up in negative mindsets sometimes.

But the real question is do you realize when you’re stuck in one of these mindets and can you shake it off?

I recorded this short audio for you to explain my story. I’m sure you can relate to it.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’m enjoying doing audio blog posts more and more these days. Can you drop me a line in the comments and tell me if you like this format better than text?

Enjoy Your Children,
Chris Thompson

I prefer the audio version of the blog entry. I can listen to it in the background while at work.
To alleviate the lack of iPad/iPhone support, providing a link to the mp3 file (below the embedded flash player) would allow iPad/iPhone users to download/stream the mp3 file to their device and still take advantage of it.

    Just a thought.

Sorry, have iPhone and definitely would prefer text – no chance/time to get to a computer

Thanks Helen – I appreciate your reply. Lots of people on iPhones probably feel the same way (I wish Apple would support flash!). Maybe I should just put all audios into a Podcast :)

    Hi Chris

I have just listened to you “negative mindset” audio and can fully relate to your comments. My daughter is also six, but I only have the one child, and it’s usually in the morning when I am trying to get her ready for school so I can get to work on time, that this sort of thing happens, but I have learned to calm down and listen to what she has to say and think that if I am working a couple of minutes late at least it was worth it and at least I have made it to work.

another thought – dr mercola does both video and full trasncript – is this an option for you?

    • Chris Thompson May 31, 2011 at 12:46 am #

Nicky – yes for sure. I love the time saving aspect of speaking the material into a microphone and posting it quickly … but I have an assistant who could transcribe it and put text together quickly too. Thanks for the tip. I love Mercola’s stuff. He’s a good model to follow.

i’m an iphone user so if the info is in a text format, i can read it immediately. i don’t mind the audio file, i just have to remember that it’s there for me to listen to the next time i’m alone at the computer!

    Hi Chris,

I can fully relate to this one. I have a three year old little man and he always does things like that. It is so easy to get caught up in your own habits and expectations, when being present with this little person is all that really matters in the every day. Like you said, what is the worst thing that is going to happen, and why miss a wonderful opportunity to share something with them.

    I prefer the audio…

    Aloha Chris,

I like the audio, it works great on my desktop. Makes it very convenient to just hit play and I can listen to your message and still get things done around the house.

    Hello Chris,

I was just wandering if you could point me in the right direction. I have a 31/2 yr old son (only child) and we are having problems dealing with other children especially little cousin who is 2. He wants to play with her but gets quite worked up and can get aggressive when he sees others giving her attention. my inlaws live with 2yr old girl which i find part of his frustrations come from them always holding her. how can i help ease his moods??

Both audio or text are great ways to get it. I prefer a text with an audio background, since it help me to get a better understanding. Thanks Chris for sharing with us this wonderful parenting tools. Karenth

    Wonderful reminder. Thanks a lot.

I prefer text. With so much going on during the day I find it easier to quickly read stuff whenever I get a chance. But if I have to watch a video or listen to audio I will skip it and usually don’t have the time to come back and watch or listen to it properly. If I do I usually get interrupted anyway. I can speed read but I can’t FFWD through video or audio.
